Grayson launches new Secretary of State history Web page

KY Secretary of State History Web Site

Surrounded by Kentucky’s former Secretaries of State, current Secretary of State Trey Grayson launched a new Web site dedicated to the history of the Office of the Secretary of State and the officeholders who have directed it.  The site features biographies, timelines, photographs and other relevant information.

“For the first time, there is a Web site that provides visitors with highlights of the lives and accomplishments of past secretaries and the history of the Office of the Secretary of State,” stated Secretary Grayson.  “There are tremendous treasures that lie within this site.  It is a pleasure to present to my fellow Kentuckians.”

First conjured by former Secretary of State Bob Babbage as a way to celebrate Kentucky’s bicentennial, the tall task of heading up the research effort for the site fell to Kandie Adkinson, whom Secretary Grayson referred to as the Office of the Secretary of State’s resident historian.  Adkinson, a 22-year career employee, heads up the nationally acclaimed Kentucky Land Office within the Office of the Secretary of State.

“It has long been a dream to provide researchers with readily available information about our office and former secretaries.  This site has not only allowed us to preserve precious moments in history, but it gathers those moments together so that this historical information can be found and utilized,” commented Adkinson.

Adkinson was aided by the Kentucky Historical Society, the Kentucky Department of Library and Archives and the Margaret L. King Library at the University of Kentucky in her research.  In addition, noted Kentucky historian and author Ron Bryant and the family members of past secretaries brought many of the biographies to life through personal anecdotes and interesting historical tidbits.  Bryant also assisted by including an historical article for the site.

The site allows visitors to follow the office’s highlights from its initial days as an appointive office, through more turbulent times, including Secretary of State Caleb Power’s alleged involvement in the assassination of Gov. William Goebel.

To visit the new site, go to www.sos.ky.gov/secdesk/history.  This is one of a number of new online initiatives Secretary Grayson has launched during his three-year tenure including new business services, expanded online document availability and an expanded online presence for the Kentucky Land Office.
